"I really enjoyed this book -which technically is a primer for using the systems archetypes. The author was very focused on these archetypes, presenting each important one in detail, with examples and easy-to-follow graphics. I read a book or two about systems thinking by now and I must say, this one added a lot to my current knowledge just because it had such a direct look at the archetypes. Before effectively addressing a specific situation, the underlying pattern must be identified - and that's exactly what systems archetypes do. Oh, boy, I became a junkie to look for these patterns around me after finishing the book. Like I had an argument with my husband and at one point in our verbal battle, I just stopped her saying, 'u-uh, escalation. One party has to withdraw unilaterally from the process to break the cycle.' And so I stepped away and started cooking. Later we discussed our problem in a much calmer way. Systems thinking can be used everywhere, folks."

- I worked for a long time as a cube-dwelling tech support rep for the world's largest computer manufacturer at one time. I volunteered for some financial, business, and manufacturing acumen courses at work, that took me to completely different systems within the company, each of those systems (customer service, sales, technical support, manufacturing, financial services, etc.). We learned how each of these systems worked over three years or so, and how they work together to run the company smoothly! Without these courses, I would have never known anything outside of my own department! We also had many third-party system issues. Airport delays on any morning of the year could cause all of our service engineers to not receive parts to repair customers' computers that morning, causing delays not just for the morning customers, but causing a cascade that could delay repairs for days in some cases! We used a lot of system thinking to monitor those situations constantly, and try to find another way to get things back on schedule! Like this book, it was a journey into not just how dynamic and complex systems are interconnected, but how those interconnections are modeled and maintained.
I already had a fair understanding of how system thinking works, but nothing really about who thought it up in the first place, or how systems of thinking have evolved so quickly, and that's what grabbed my interest. It will continue to help me look at everything as a system, not just corporate system structure. From politics to space exploration, and even your personal relationships, systems are all around us! Learning how it all works together has been a fun adventure. - I’m a junkie for this topic for quite some time now… It started with Gerald Weinberg and Russell Ackoff to me, then Bertalanffy, Meadows, Peter Senge and Stroh. Read each of their books. In my opinion systems thinking is one of the most powerful tools we have to understand and change the world around us. So I’m keen on learning about it.
I’m very glad that other authors are also catching on to this important topic and share wisdom through their point of view. I enjoy Albert Rutherford’s books as they make this otherwise difficult topic quite understandable to those who are not so familiar with it. I wish there was a book like his around 20 years ago when I started dwelling into the topic, would have made my life easier.
I can appreciate the stories through which this author presents the systems archetypes, some of those are new to me. One can learn something from every book. We don't always think about it but so much of our lives are governed by the systems in work, at home, financial institutions and government. Systems make our lives run smoother [and sometimes not] but if you can learn how to think in systems you have an edge on everyone that isn't. By thinking in systems you are essentially taking charge of your life and training yourself to think in terms of archetypes. But applied to any company, thinking in systems changes everything.
When a massive problem strikes, instead of everyone losing their minds, if you train people to think of solutions before a situation arises you will be ahead of the game. And when a situation arises and you don't know what to do, that is an opportunity to create a system for when it happens again. Creating systems playbooks is an amazing strategy that works. I really appeciated the description of the systems archetypes. This topic rang true for me.
